Why We Cook Together (Even When It's Easier Not To)

The Table Is Where It Happens

Somewhere between chopping onions and arguing over how much garlic is too much (there is no such thing), cooking together became our thing. Not a chore. Not a division of labor. A ritual.

Most nights it would be easier to order in. We both work. We’re both tired. But there’s something about standing in the kitchen together, music playing, figuring out what to do with whatever’s in the fridge — that’s when the real conversations happen.

Planning the Week

We started planning our meals for the week, not because we’re those people, but because we kept wasting food and eating out of frustration. Randy actually started building an app for it — Sobremesa — named after the Spanish tradition of lingering at the table after a meal, just talking.

It’s still a work in progress, like most things we do. But the idea behind it is simple: meals are better when you think about them a little, and share them with someone.

What This Means for Belize

One of the things we’re most excited about is the food in Belize. Fresh fish, local produce, flavors we’ve only read about. We want our kitchen there to be the center of everything — where friends gather, where we try new things, where we slow down.

That’s the life we’re building toward. Not just a place to live, but a way to live.

Our Go-To Right Now

Lately it’s been jerk chicken with rice and beans — practice for the Caribbean life. Anitra has the seasoning dialed in. Randy handles the grill. We eat outside when the Florida weather cooperates.

It’s not Belize yet. But it’s getting closer. 🌶️
